Updates about sturgeons

On 7 September 2004, the Secretariat published the export quotas of sturgeon for the year 2004 for three Black Sea countries, i.e. Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia and Montenegro. Please see the press release issued on the same date for more details.

In response to the misleading information seen in various newspapers about those quotas, the Secretariat issued a press release titled "CITES has not 'banned' caviar or 'punished' producers" on 3 September 2004.

The CITES export quotas for sturgeons for the current and previous years are available on this site. Please also check the "Sturgeons" section under "CITES programme" for more in-depth information about the relationship between CITES and sturgeons.
