The new Appendices
At its 12th meeting (Santiago, 3-15 November 2002) the Conference
of the Parties to CITES adopted a number of amendments to Appendices
I and II of the Convention. These will enter into force on 13 February
2003. The decisions adopted also have an effect on Appendix III,
since some species currently included in Appendix III will be listed
instead in Appendix II.
In preparing the new version of Appendices I and II, the Secretariat
has combined these with Appendix III, for ease of reference. In
addition, it has made a number of changes to the presentation,
in order to make the Appendices
easier to use. The most notable changes are:
- most of the substantive annotations are now placed against
the name of the species concerned, to reduce the need for cross-referencing;
- common names of higher taxa have been added;
- the majority of nomenclatural annotations have been removed
because the synonyms are contained in the Checklist of CITES Species
which the Conference of the Parties has now adopted as the standard
nomenclature; and
- an index of scientific and common names of higher taxa has
been added to make them easier to find.

2003 is also available on this site in Word and PDF formats:
