Org. Setting And Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between states. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. The CITES Secretariat is administered by UNEP and is located at the Geneva duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Secretary-General, the incumbent will perform the following functions:

Responsibilities

  1. Assists with the development, project management, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects/partnerships on capacity building; assists with the monitoring and analysis of programme/project/partnerships development and implementation.
  2. Develops and maintains a close working relationship with key implementing partner agencies.
  3. Coordinates the Secretariat's capacity-building efforts.
  4. Develops and coordinates the preparation of training materials.
  5. Offers advice on the use of new educational technologies.
  6. Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  7. Organizes and prepares written outputs e.g draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
  8. Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings and conferences of CITES.
  9. Ensures that programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion, and, in liaison with other organizations within and outside of the United Nations System, donors and agencies, as appropriate.
  10. Prepares project proposals, including work programmes and budget details.
  11. Leads the project management of designated capacity-building projects.
  12. Represents the Secretariat at various international meetings, seminars, workshops.
  13. Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Section and across all Teams within the Secretariat.
  14. Undertakes other related duties.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental studies, education and educational technology, development planning or other relevant discipline with specialization in environment or natural sciences or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in capacity building, modern information and knowledge management or related field including some experience at the international level.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French or Spanish or another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Method

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position will include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures. This position is funded for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
