No. 708 Lausanne, 21 December 1992 CONCERNING: GUATEMALA Export Regulation 1.With Notification to the Parties No. 510, of 25 November 1988, the CITES Secretariat informed the Parties that Guatemala had temporarily suspended all activities related to hunting, capture, local trade, export and re-export of wild fauna. 2.On 13 September 1992, the Management Authority of Guatemala informed the Secretariat that the Government of Guatemala, by Decree 4-89, issued the Law on Protected Areas (Ley de Areas Protegidas) in 1989 which replaced the resolution adopted in 1988. 3.Currently, the export of wild animals that are not listed as endangered species but are listed as protected species may be allowed if the requirements established by the Management Authority are followed (Article 49 of the Law). It is also posible to breed in captivity wild animals and to artificially propagate plants for commercial purposes, provided that all Guatemalan regulations on this matter are respected (Article 53 of the Law). 4.A copy of the law referred to in paragraph 2 above is attached. 5.However, the CITES Secretariat requests that all Parties check with the CITES Secretariat the validity of all Guatemalan CITES permits they may receive. 6.Consequently, Notification to the Parties No. 510 is hereby cancelled.
