Notification to the Parties

No. 784 Geneva, 10 March 1994

CONCERNING:

Significant Trade in Animal Species Included in Appendix II

Recommendations of the Animals Committee

In accordance with Resolution Conf. 8.9, the Animals Committee has adopted a number of primary and secondary recommendations relating to Appendix-II species subject to significant levels of trade. The recommendations that relate to specific countries have been sent direct to the authorities of those countries. A number of the recommendations, however, relate to all Parties. These recommendations are as follows.

Mammals

Felis manul

The Secretariat should advise Parties not to accept imports of specimens of Felis manul from Mongolia until the Secretariat has notified the Parties that the Government of Mongolia has established a scientifically based export quota.

Moschus spp.

All Parties should increase their enforcement efforts to ensure that all specimens of Moschus species imported, including derivatives, have been legally exported and should advise the Secretariat of enforcement steps taken.

Birds

Goura cristata

All Parties should pay particular attention to large shipments of purportedly captive-bred specimens of Goura cristata and should investigate the origin of all specimens in trade.

Reptiles

Chamaeleo spp. and Phelsuma spp.

All Parties are urged not to accept export documents issued by the Management Authority of Madagascar that do not accurately indicate the species being traded.

Butterflies

Trogonoptera brookiana

All Parties should ensure that all trade in specimens of Trogonoptera brookiana is covered by the appropriate CITES documents.
