CONCERNING:

Declaration of Ivory Stocks by African Elephant Range States

1. In response to Notification to the Parties No. 984 of 4 July 1997, the African elephant range States mentioned below declared their government ivory stocks by 18 September 1997, the deadline agreed by the Conference of the Parties during its 10th meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe. Two States declared their stocks after the deadline. Only nine out of the 37 range States did not confirm the receipt of the above Notification or the follow-up reminder sent to all the African elephant range States dated 4 September 1997, some of them being not contactable either by telephone or telefax because of internal civil strife.

2.     The Secretariat and TRAFFIC are preparing to undertake the auditing of the declared ivory stocks, as required by the Conference of the Parties (see document Com.10.35), and expect to initiate this exercise shortly.

3.     This Notification replaces Notification to the Parties No. 984.
