Notifications to the Parties

No. 1998/05
Geneva, 2 March 1998

CONCERNING:

CAMEROON

Lifting of Standing Committee Suspension on
Imports of Specimens of Psittacus erithacus

1. In Notification to the Parties No. 993 of 21 October 1997, the Secretariat communicated to the Parties of the recommendation of the Standing Committee, made during its 38th meeting in Harare (Zimbabwe) in June 1997, to suspend the import of specimens of Psittacus erithacus originating in Cameroon because that country had exceeded its 1996 export quota for this species by 11,000 birds, the actual quota being 12,000 birds. 2. The Standing Committee also asked the Management Authority of Cameroon to submit to the Secretariat a report providing details of measures taken by Cameroon to ensure the correct monitoring of the use of its export quota for Psittacus erithacus, on the basis of which the Secretariat, if satisfied, should notify the Parties of the quota for this species for the calendar year 1998. 3. The Management Authority of Cameroon has transmitted to the Secretariat the report requested by the Standing Committee, and is satisfied that the measures proposed by Cameroon will minimize the possibility of exceeding its export quota for Psittacus erithacus. Therefore, pursuant to the Standing Committee recommendation recorded in paragraph 1 a) of Notification to the Parties No. 993, the Secretariat notifies the Parties to authorize imports of specimens of Psittacus erithacus originating in Cameroon under its export quota of 12,000 specimens for 1998. 4. The Parties are, however, requested to monitor closely imports of specimens of Psittacus erithacus originating in Cameroon and to inform the Secretariat as soon as possible of any irregularities they may observe. 5. Pursuant to the decision of the Standing Committee as stated in paragraph 1 c) of Notification to the Parties No. 993, the Secretariat will conduct a mission to Cameroon, at an appripriate time in 1998, to evaluate measures that it has taken to control the trade in Psittacus erithacus and also the general problems of CITES implementation and enforcement in that country. The Secretariat will report the findings of the mission direct to the Standing Committee, which will decide on follow-up, if any. 6. This Notification replaces Notification to the Parties No. 993 of 21 October 1997.
