Notification to the Parties

No. 1999/99 Geneva, 29 December 1999

CONCERNING:

Suspension of import of leopard hunting trophies and skins

1. Resolution Conf. 10.14 directs the Secretariat to recommend to the Parties to suspend imports of leopard hunting trophies and skins from any country that is granted an annual quota under the Resolution and that has not met the reporting requirement, after checking with the range State concerned that the report has not been submitted.

2. On 5 November 1999, the Secretariat sent a reminder to all countries with an export quota for leopard hunting trophies and skins that the reports required in paragraph e) of Resolution Conf. 10.14 were long overdue for several countries and that the Secretariat was obliged to recommend a suspension of imports in accordance with this Resolution.

3. No response has been received from any of the countries for which reports are outstanding, although several other countries with export quotas provided clarifications regarding previous reports or other comments on the reporting system.

4. The Secretariat consequently recommends that Parties suspend imports of leopard hunting trophies and skins from Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe until further notice.
