Notification to the Parties

No. 2000/012 Geneva, 31 January 2000

CONCERNING:

Stricter domestic measures and assistance to Parties in facilitating trade

1. The Secretariat intends to create a page on its Web site containing information about measures adopted by Parties that are stricter than the provisions of the Convention. The Secretariat believes that provision of this information may help avoid some infractions and implementation problems.

2. For example, traders will be able to discover whether a Party requires the prior issuance of an import permit for all specimens of CITES-listed species, whether a Party has designated ports for import and export of CITES specimens, whether a Party has regulations relating to personal effects exemptions, etc.

3. The Secretariat invites Parties to supply it with information on stricter measures, for inclusion in the Web page, together with a copy of the relevant legislation. The examples in paragraph 2 above give an indication of the type of information that might be helpful.

4. There is no time limit for sending information. The Web site page can be updated at any time. If any Party already has a Web site containing information on its stricter domestic measures, the Secretariat would be glad to establish a link direct from its own Web site.
