Notification to the Parties

CONCERNING:

Checklists of animal species listed in the CITES Appendices
and in European Community (EC) Regulation No. 338/97

1. In September 2001 the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), which is the Scientific Authority of the United Kingdom for fauna, published the following Checklists of animal species listed in the CITES Appendices and in European Community (EC) Regulation No. 338/97. These Checklists were prepared by the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre.

– UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (2001). Checklist of herpetofauna listed in the CITES Appendices and in EC Regulation 338/97. 8th edition. JNCC report No. 291.

– UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (2001). Checklist of fish and invertebrates listed in the CITES Appendices and in EC Regulation 338/97. 5th edition. JNCC report No. 292.

– UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (2001). Checklist of mammals listed in the CITES Appendices and in EC Regulation 338/97. 5th edition. JNCC report No. 293.

– UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (2001). Checklist of birds listed in the CITES Appendices and in EC Regulation 338/97. 6th edition. JNCC report No. 294.

2. The purpose of these publications is to provide a comprehensive list of the animal species included in the CITES Appendices, together with their category in the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals, the appropriate Annex in EC Regulation 338/97, and the geographical range, by country, of each taxon.

3. These revised editions incorporate additions and amendments to the CITES Appendices valid from 19 July 2000 for Appendices I and II, and therefore including those made at the 11th meeting of the Conference of Parties, Gigiri, in April 2000, and from 13 September 2000 for Appendix III. They also include relevant references to the scientific literature.

4. In a publication of this nature, it is inevitable that users will discover entries that need correcting or updating. UNEP-WCMC and JNCC would be grateful to receive details of any such corrections so that the necessary changes can be made in the database from which this document is produced. Any other comments on the usefulness of these documents will also be gratefully received.

5. With the support of the CITES Secretariat, JNCC has sent, free of charge, a single copy of each publication to all Management Authorities of the Parties.

6. It is recognized that these documents may also be of use to Scientific Authorities and others. Accordingly, further copies of this report can be obtained from:
