Data sharing facility: Definition of objectives and tasks for first level of functionality

Level 1: Distributed metadatabase of information sources
- Initial survey to identify potential providers of data
- UNEP-WCMC draft survey and circulate among expert subgroup
- Expert subgroup to provide feedback/amendments to UNEP-WCMC
- UNEP-WCMC to send questionnaire to national Management Authorities
- UNEP-WCMC to collate data and report results to the expert subgroup
- Second survey to identify and characterise existing information sources and local information delivery capacity
- UNEP-WCMC draft questionnaire and circulate among expert subgroup
- Expert subgroup to provide feedback/amendments to UNEP-WCMC
- UNEP-WCMC to run survey
- UNEP-WCMC to collate data and report results to the expert subgroup
- Establishment of metadata network
- UNEP-WCMC, in collaboration with local data providers, to develop a standard querying facility for consultation of distributed metadata, and connect distributed servers to central hub.
- Institutions with metadata but without server, to:
- Identify in-country server and transfer metadata, or
- Set up their own server, or
- Transfer and remotely maintain metadata at UNEP-WCMC
In-country host to:
- Convert metadata to standard format or install conversion software
UNEP-WCMC, to:
- Convert guest metadatabases to standard format and provide web-based tool for remote management of metadata by guest institution
- UNEP-WCMC to facilitate tools for standard collection of metadata by institutions with available data but no metadata
Institutions with data but no metadata, to maintain metadata and subsequently implement Task 2.
